Home Care (also known as in-home care, community care, home help, home support and in-home nursing care) is the umbrella term for a range of services that allow people to remain living independently in their own homes. Home Care services can assist with a wide range of tasks.

What qualifies a person for IHSS?
To be eligible, you must be over 65 years of age, or disabled, or blind. Disabled children are also potentially eligible for IHSS. IHSS is considered an alternative to out-of-home care, such as nursing homes or board and care facilities.
What does IHSS pay caregivers?
Effective January 1, 2021:
- The County IHSS wage rate for providers is $15.00 per hour.
- The Back-Up Attendant Program (BUAP) provider wage rate is $18.00 per hour.
How is home care defined?
Home care includes any professional support services that allow a person to live safely in their home. In-home care services can help someone who is aging and needs assistance to live independently; is managing chronic health issues; is recovering from a medical setback; or has special needs or a disability.
How long does IHSS approval take?
Currently, the application process can be confusing, and at present only 10% of eligible families get approved for IHSS. Of those who do get approved, it can take anywhere from two weeks to several months to finally receive benefits.
Can I work and receive IHSS?
If you work, you may qualify for no-cost IHSS even if you think you have to pay a share of cost. That’s because if you have a disability, you could sign up for Medi-Cal’s Working Disabled Program (WDP).
