Most taxpayers will put a number on line 5 (indicated here by the red arrow) that will help your employer calculate how much federal income tax is to be withheld from your paycheck. That number is the number of allowances you are claiming and it’s the one that gives taxpayers fits trying to get right.

When do you not get a work allowance?
If you have earnings but you (or your partner) are not responsible for a child or do not have limited capability for work you will not be eligible for a work allowance. When you are either working or starting work, you may have some one–off costs that you have to pay.
